The owner of the Cleveland Indians, a beautiful, smart, and goal-oriented woman, has just inherited the franchise. Unfortunately, her plan is to relocate the team to Miami, and a losing season is her only ticket to Florida. To achieve this, she assembles the wildest gang of screwballs that ever spit tobacco. They may be handsome, but they are hopelessly inept.
The catcher, Tom Berenger, is a washed-up womanizer who struck out in life. The ace pitcher, Charlie Sheen, is a punked-out crazy who struck out with the law. And the third baseman, Corbin Bernsen of "L.A. Law" fame, is more concerned with fielding endorsements than grounders. Throw in a busload of other misfits, and you have a hilariously doomed lineup destined for disaster.
Or is it? This baseball comedy and slob comedy rolled into one actually works as entertainment, if not as a piece of cinematic mastery. James Gammon is the has-been manager hired to lead the last-place Cleveland Indians, whose owner wants them to lose so she can sell the team.
However, the team of has-beens and never-wases that he assembles (including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes) develops a sense of pride and turns the team around. There's plenty of rowdy humor about sex, race, and whatever else they can make fun of.
Look for Rene Russo (in her first film role) as Berenger's romantic interest, and Wesley Snipes in his first showy role as Willie Mays Hayes, the team's base-stealing ace. Despite the team's initial dysfunction, their newfound camaraderie and determination to prove their worth lead to an unexpected turnaround, much to the chagrin of the owner.
The ragtag group of misfits, each with their own unique quirks and shortcomings, gradually come together as a team, showcasing the power of teamwork and the triumph of the underdog. The film's hilarious and irreverent humor, combined with its heartwarming moments, make it a delightful and entertaining watch for fans of sports comedies and underdog stories.
